Ayurveda, the ancient method of healing mind, body, and consciousness, provides a unique approach to dealing with anxiety, depression, and phobias. This program will provide comprehensive, practical, and applied Ayurvedic approaches to psychiatric problems, drawing especially from Graha Chikitsa (the psychiatric branch of Ayurveda). It will offer us practical training in Ayurveda’s basic pulse, tongue, nail, and eye diagnosis techniques, explore its concept of mind and its view of the role of thoughts, feelings, and emotions in daily life, and explain the mano vaha srotas (“mind-carrying channels”) in the human body as well as Ayurvedic etiology and symptomatology. The program will also include discussions of spiritual guidelines for maintaining mental health and preventing psychiatric illness and methods to bring awareness to emotions in order to open the door to inner bliss.
Case studies will be presented and healing/ treatments for depression, anxiety, and phobias will be explored. As an example, the session on pulse diagnosis presents an easy-to-learn and extremely effective tool to diagnose and treat stress-related imbalances such as anxiety and depression. This session addresses how to use pulse diagnosis as a mind-body therapy and to:

  1. Determine body type and treat imbalances;
  2. Treat imbalances with a lifestyle and diet in harmony with nature;
  3. Use aroma, herbs and marma point therapy;
  4. Integrate an Ayurvedic lifestyle into an American way of life.

Note: This program is oriented toward primary care and mental health professionals.
